The Americano is one of a few very select bikes in the world that stand up in the most rugged long distance touring environment. While the riders themselves might be scarce to see, the Americano is a bike that has many times over reached the corners of the earth.
At the heart of Co-Motion bicycles is a company that is the world’s premier specialty tandem bicycle manufacturer and fabrication. I cannot imagine ever finding someone to dispute this. It’s not marketing, it’s just fact. But of course they all ride single bikes as well and why make only tandems?
The Americano was built using the lessons learned from the rigors of tandem riding, racing and touring. If you think a single bike takes a beating, try putting two 6’5” men sprinting as hard as they can on a track tandem.
The Americano uses Reynolds 725 over-sized tubes at that heart of its design. The rear triangle is essentially right off their touring tandem spec and is built around their hand-made dishless, symmetrically laced tandem rear wheel with a 145mm axle.
Of course it is laden with bottle and fender mounts and is available with disc brakes as well.
Here in the Pacific Northwest, our favorite is the Americano with disc brakes. There are few moments that compare to screaming down Steven’s Pass in the rain with 80lbs of gear on your bike and traditional brakes. If you have not done that yet, save yourself the heart attack and advance straight to disc brakes. Your peace of mind (and your wheels) will thank you for the upgrade.
