If you don’t plan on spending $230 on a cycling helmet, then don’t try on the IONOS. The IONOS is a few years old now as its technology simply has not been beat – not even by its creators. As a general rule, most helmets are made in the same fundamental steps: insert the poly-outer shell into the mold, close the lid and then shoot the EPS foam into the mold. The IONOS does this process with an added twist – they have included an in-mold-composite-subframe “roll cage” layer to the foam. This cage acts as a massive binding agent to the EPS liner that in turn allows less material while still maintaining the integrity of the rules governing impact ratings. You can see the roll-cage in between the sections of foam and outer shell. That cage is the secret to this helmets main design attribute: ventilation.
The IONOS also gets Giro’s top of the line fit retention system, the ROC LOC 4. This system can be used in pretty much all major endurance elements of racing – including MTB XC.
